This course builds on the foundational knowledge acquired in SENV 223: Introduction to Geographic Information Systems and focuses on the application of GIS in addressing environmental planning, natural resource management, and sustainability challenges. It equips students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in spatial data management, geodatabase development, data quality assessment, terrain analysis, spatial interpolation, network analysis, land use/land cover analysis, and GIS project design and implementation.
The course emphasizes the use of GIS as a decision-support tool for solving real-world environmental problems, including climate change adaptation, watershed management, biodiversity conservation, urban and regional planning, disaster risk reduction, and sustainable natural resource management. Students gain hands-on experience using GIS software to manage, analyze, visualize, and interpret spatial data for evidence-based decision-making.
By the end of the course, students will be able to organize and manage spatial databases, perform advanced spatial analyses, develop GIS solutions to environmental and planning challenges, and design and implement GIS projects that support sustainable development initiatives. The course integrates theory with practical laboratory exercises and case studies to prepare students for professional practice and further studies in GIS and related disciplines.
