Purpose of the Course

Students should be able to describe the consistent process that dietitian nutritionists follow in any intervention with individuals, groups or populations; in clinical settings, public health or health promotion in collaboration with other medical practitioners. They should also articulate specific skills, knowledge and critical reasoning that is employed and the environmental factors that influence the practice of dietetics.

 

Course Content

Introduction to nutrition therapy; role of dieticians and other health professionals in the therapeutic process; application of the principles of dietetics: The nutrition care algorithm, critical thinking. Appropriate nutrition interventions during illnesses. Team approach in patient care and management. Responsibilities of health care team members in nutritional care. Nutrition care process steps: Nutrition assessment, nutrition diagnosis, nutrition intervention, nutrition monitoring and evaluation. Nutrition care and support for hospitalized patients. Standards of nutrition support for hospitalized patients. Nutrition care steps for admitted patients. Nutrition counselling. Nutrition therapy process. Design, and implementation of nutrition care plans; evaluation of client response and progress. Discharge plan. Nutrition care process algorithm.

 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course students should be able to

1. Discuss the practice of therapeutic nutrition as an essential component of healthcare systems and its operations in health care systems and operations

2. Explain the need for therapeutic nutrition

3. Explain the factors determining the appropriate nutrition interventions during illnesses
