Department of Curriculum and Instruction

Instruction is usually a technical, professional and complex operation. Normally, it is an involving process. For it to be efficiently developed and conducted, due considerations must be given to the country's philosophy of education, nature of the education curriculum pursued or preferred, the main players which include school teachers and learners in the process, the learning environment and the learning facilities and resources. All these factors are referred to as the determinants of the selected and used approaches, methods of technics of instructions. In other words the other three processes depend upon the stated five factors. The interest in this course is on the concept of teaching methods as:

1. The need for methods of teaching in instruction.

2. Considerations in identifying the methods of teaching.

3. Selection and use of correct methods of teaching.

4. Understanding the families and/or categories of teaching methods.

5. Challenges of identifying, selecting and using methods of teaching in instruction.

6. The nature of the methods of teaching. 

The course contains the following topics(strands) as:

1. General Introduction to Teaching Methods.

2. Assisting Approach to Teaching.

3. Planning and Organizing for Instruction.

4. Motivation and Reinforcement.

5. Communication in class.

6. Individual Differences.

7. Course Assessment/Evaluation.
