First Semester

1. Purpose of the Course

 This course builds on the Solid State Physics I. The course covers the band theory of solids, theory of semiconductors and their applications, introduction to superconductors, electrical properties of insulators, magnetic properties of solids and imperfections in solids.

 2. Course Objectives

 At the end of the course, students should be able to:

a) Distinguish between conductors, insulators and semiconductors based on band theories;

b) Describe superconductivity and their properties.

c) Distinguish between the various types of magnetic materials and their applications.

d) Describe defects in solid materials and alloys.

Purpose of the course

This course introduces learners to the basics of Thermodynamics, laws of thermodynamics and their applications, thermodynamic potentials and the unattainability of absolute zero temperature.
